Here are different sets of requirements that you'll need when applying for a Student Visa. Make sure you fulfil all the requirements.

To apply for a study permit, you need an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI). A DLI is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students.

Students from English-speaking nations do not need to prove their English language proficiency to get admission in any program in Canada; however, on the other hand, students from non-English-speaking countries may need to furnish an updated certificate of English language test along with the application.

The Minimum requirement for an IELTS score for is Overall 6.5 with each band not less than 6. Similarly, for Bachelor, PG, and some master programs, the requirement is 6.5 band overall. This is the minimum score sought for admissions in popular colleges and universities in Canada.

The minimum requirement of PTE score is overall 60 with a minimum band score of 53. This score is necessary for Bachelor's programs, Advanced Diplomas, and Post Graduate Programs.

However, recently students with an overall score of 56 with each band not less than 51 have also got a study permit. Therefore, students should not worry if they have a good academy and ECA, we can advise applying for universities in Canada and Diploma programs.

When applying for your study permit, you and each family member who comes with you to Canada must have

  • a valid passport or travel document
  • two recent passport-size photos

You must prove that you can support yourself and the family members who come with you while you are in Canada.

You can prove your funds with

  • proof of a Canadian bank account in your name, if you've transferred money to Canada
  • a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution
  • proof of a student or education loan from a bank
  • your bank statements for the past 4 months
  • a bank draft that can be converted to Canadian dollars
  • proof you paid tuition and housing fees
  • a letter from the person or school giving you money, or
  • proof of funding paid from within Canada, if you have a scholarship or are in a Canadian-funded educational program

If you are applying from outside of Canada and have never given your biometrics before, you will be required to collect your fingerprints and photo at an official Visa Application Centre. You will need to pay an $85 CAN fee (in addition to the $150 CAN study permit fee) and set an appointment at an official biometric collection site.

Residents from some countries will also need to provide a medical exam done by an approved panel physician to complete their application.

If you aren't currently in your home country, you may have to prove your immigration status in the country you apply from.

If the government that issued your passport or travel document needs you to have a re-entry permit, you must get one before you apply for a Canadian visa. You may also need other documents.

The Canadian government says it may take up to 13 weeks for your study permit application to be processed. So, make sure to account for the waiting time and start your application process four to six months before your departure!

The processing time for your visa depends on many things. Such factors are the type of application submitted (online or on paper), if you sent all the required documents, how easily it is for them to verify your information, or how long it takes you to answer any requests on on their side.

Prepare all the documents required for your permit before starting your application. According to the Canadian government, you will need the following:

  1. The original or electronic copy of your letter of acceptance from a DLI
  2. Proof of identity (a valid passport or travel document, plus two recent passport-sized photos)
  3. Proof of funds guaranteeing you will be able to financially support yourself during your studies (enough to cover your tuition fees and living costs, or a minimum of $10,000 CAD per year of study)
  4. A letter of explanation detailing your reasons for studying in Canada and assuring your understanding of your responsibilities as an international student
  5. A Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) if you are planning on studying in Québec
  6. A Custodian Declaration, if you are under 17 years old
  7. The receipt for your payment of the $150 CAD study permit fee.

How early can you arrive in Canada before you start studying?

There is no set time frame for you to arrive in Canada before you begin your studies. You should just arrive to give yourself a reasonable amount of time to prepare before you start studying.

You are not allowed to work on or off campus until you begin your studies in Canada.

Changing your designated learning institution if you're outside Canada

If your application for a study permit has been approved and you change your designated learning institution, you must submit a new study permit application with a new letter of acceptance. You must also pay all the fees for the new application.

When you arrive in Canada, you'll meet a border services officer who will make sure you meet some basic requirements. To enter Canada, you must

  • have a valid travel document, such as a passport
  • have the port of entry letter of introduction the visa office sent you when they approved your study permit
  • have a copy of a valid letter of acceptance from your college/university
  • have letters of reference or any other documents the visa office told you to bring
  • be in good health
  • have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • have valid immigration medical exam results/ COVID vaccination
  • prove that you'll leave Canada at the end of your stay

Your school or training facility may need you to prove you entered Canada. If you need proof of entry, make sure a border services officer stamps your passport before you leave Canadian customs. You may also be able to use a Primary Inspection Kiosk to stamp your passport.
